Audi Displays New Q5 and RS 3 plus A5 Sportback at Paris Motor Show

Volkswagen Group’s Audi premium car division unveiled a larger, more spacious 2018 Q5 compact premium SUV with an array of high-tech features and more efficient powertrain at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Other new models in the limelight included the 2017 RS 3 compact sedan with a robust 400-horsepower powertrain that will reach U.S. showrooms in the summer of 2017 and the 2017 A5/S5 Sportback compact premium car with a more swashbuckling appearance.

The latest Q5 boasts new diesel engines—likely only for the European market—and is 198 pounds lighter than the prior model, with a sleeker shape for enhanced aerodynamics. The second-generation Q5’s new quattro all-wheel-drive system disengages the rear-axle drive whenever it isn’t needed for optimal efficiency, without diminishing traction, Audi says. New chassis choices and air suspension are available along with high-tech features including Audi connect, the Audi virtual cockpit, infotainment systems, and a host of advanced driver-assistance features.

In addition, Audi showed off its RS 3 Sedan that channels pure energy with its 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder TFSI power unit that makes 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. The new RS 3 is wider than the base model and features a Singleframe grille with quattro logo and signature large oval exhaust tailpipes. The interior has been accessorized to create more of a motorsports feel with black instrument dials and red needles; a rev counter in the center; and tire pressure, torque, and g-force displays. It will be available in the United States next summer.

Audi also showed off its A5 Sportback 5-door compact premium coupe with wide grille and expanded dimensions, including a 17-cu.-ft. luggage compartment and a choice of new engines. The sporty car’s variable suspension uses continuous damping control technology and works with four different driving modes. A performance S5 model with a 3.0-liter TFSI gasoline engine that produces 349 horsepower also is for sale.

President Obama Lifts Restrictions on Cuban Rum and Cigars

American travelers to Cuba can now stuff their suitcases with as many bottles of rum and Cuban cigars as they want: President Obama lifted the remaining restrictions on those items in a round of executive actions announced Friday.

The new regulations, released by the Treasury Department, include a provision that removes the previous $100 value limit on the amount of rum and alcohol travelers could bring to the U.S. from Cuba. They also make it easier for the U.S. to import Cuban pharmaceuticals, Cubans to buy U.S. goods online and U.S. providers to work on Cuban infrastructure, among other changes.

“The Treasury Department has worked to break down economic barriers in areas such as travel, trade and commerce, banking, and telecommunications,” Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement. “Today’s action builds on this progress by enabling more scientific collaboration, grants and scholarships, people-to-people contact, and private sector growth. These steps have the potential to accelerate constructive change and unlock greater economic opportunity for Cubans and Americans.”

WASHINGTON) – Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone devices will be banned from air transportation in the United States starting Saturday at noon EDT (1600 GMT) under an emergency order, regulators said Friday.

The order from the U.S. Transportation Department and other agencies bars owners from carrying on the devices or in baggage during flights. Passengers attempting to transport them could be fined or have them confiscated.

Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd suspended the manufacture and sale of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 device following numerous reports of the phones catching fire. (Reporting by David Shepardson; Editing by James Dalgleish)

Doctors in Guangzhou Province, South China have successfully operated on a 28-week-old fetus with congenital heart disease - while in its mom’s belly. 

The 39-year-old patient, whose surname is Xie, became pregnant for a second time six months ago. Twenty-one weeks later, she had an ultrasonic test which showed the fetus was suffering from arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. The chances of survival are very low if surgery is undertaken after birth.
Xie insisted she wanted to keep the baby. And on September 22, doctors in Guangzhou conducted interventional cardiology treatment, with the help of experts from Austria. The size of the fetus’ heart was as small as an almond so the slightest movement could have resulted in damage, said Zhuang Jian, the director of Guangdong General Hospital. 

Xie left the hospital four days after the successful operation. This is the first time Chinese doctors have conducted an interventional cardiology operation on a fetus’ congenital heart disease.
